Tanning salon Little Rock, Florida, is a tanning spa with a history of producing the very best skin.
Today, it’s one of the best-known tanning facilities in the US, and it has its fair share of controversy.
The facility opened in 2005 and has operated as an all-female salon since then, with more than 40 women working there, according to local news site the Palm Beach Post.
But in January 2017, a local woman filed a lawsuit alleging discrimination on the basis of gender, alleging she was rejected because of her gender.
In an interview with ABC News, the woman, who is not identified by name, said she was hired at the salon in 2003, just as it was becoming a hotbed for male-dominated industry, and that her gender was never a factor.
“I just feel like my skin is being taken advantage of,” the woman said.
“I don’t have any choice but to fight back and say, ‘Yes, I am a woman and I am trying to do my best.'”
The lawsuit claims Little Rock’s city council has a policy against women coming to the salon, but Little Rock Mayor Mike Worthy defended the policy, saying that the company “provides equal opportunity to all.”
The city has since adopted a new policy that prohibits discrimination based on race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, gender identity, gender expression, disability, and pregnancy.
Little Rock is also a hot spot for the “gender pay gap” , a statistic that measures the disparity between the earnings of men and women for similar jobs, according the US Census Bureau.
In 2015, Little Rock had the third highest gap between male and female earnings of any city in the country, according a study published in the Journal of Women’s Health.
The city says it is in the process of revamping its policy to prevent gender discrimination, and will be taking a gender equity approach to the hiring process.
But there are some concerns over the future of Little Rock as a tannery.
In an article on the local paper, the Post’s Michael Wain, who covers the area for the newspaper, noted that some local businesses in Little Rock are already trying to sell their goods in the market.
He pointed out that the city has been able to attract some of the top tanning shops in the state by allowing them to use the Little Rock Mall as a sales center, though some businesses are concerned about whether that would open the door for more discrimination.
“It’s not an open secret that there’s a very strong perception that women aren’t going to get hired for those jobs,” Wain said.
“There’s a lot of discussion about that.
You’re just seeing more companies looking at Little Rock and thinking, ‘We need to do something about it.'”
He added that the fact that some businesses in the area are already offering their products in stores is “a testament to the city’s determination to bring the best in America to the people of Little ROCK.”
“It doesn’t necessarily mean that the [city] will be able to get away with it, but it certainly will be something to look forward to in the future,” he said.
Little Rochelle, an all women’s tanning shop, said the city is making a “very strong commitment to improving its policies and practices” in the hopes that the situation will improve soon.
The owner of Little Rochelle said she hopes to continue to operate, but that she is taking it very seriously.
“We’re going to do everything we can to be able in the next two years to improve the way our policies are applied,” she said.
